Can You Change Grout Color Without Regrouting?
Yes. You can change grout color without tearing out the old grout by using a grout stain, also called a grout colorant. It bonds to clean, cured cement grout to refresh or completely change the color, and it seals the joint at the same time for a uniform, long-lasting finish.
How grout staining works
A grout colorant is a pigmented coating made to bond to cement grout. Once applied and cured, it becomes the new color of the joint and adds a protective, sealing layer. It is a coating for the grout only, so with care it does not change the tile.

How to apply grout stain
- Deep clean the grout and let it dry fully.
- Apply the colorant to the joints with a small brush.
- Wipe stray colorant off the tile before it sets.
- Let it cure so the color and seal set up.
When staining is not the answer
Grout staining works on clean, cured cement grout. It is not made for epoxy grout, and it will not hold on dirty, crumbling, or damaged joints. If the grout is failing, repair it first, then stain for a consistent look.
