How Do You Clean Grout the Right Way?
Clean grout with a purpose-made grout cleaner and a stiff brush, working the cleaner into the joints and rinsing well. Skip harsh acids and bleach on cement grout, since they can erode the joint and strip color. A safe crystal cleaner lifts dirt and buildup without the damage.
Everyday cleaning routine
- Sweep or vacuum loose dirt so you are not grinding it into the joints.
- Apply a grout-safe cleaner and let it dwell for a few minutes.
- Scrub along the joints with a stiff nylon brush.
- Rinse thoroughly and wipe the surface dry.
Deep cleaning stained grout
For set-in grime, let the cleaner dwell longer and scrub in sections. Work in small areas so the cleaner does not dry out. After a deep clean, reseal cement grout to protect the fresh surface.
What to avoid
- Bleach and strong acids can eat into cement grout and fade the color.
- Wire brushes and metal tools scratch and gouge joints.
- Oil-based or waxy cleaners can leave residue that traps dirt.
Keep grout cleaner longer
Sealed grout resists staining and wipes clean far more easily, so a seal after cleaning is the single best way to cut future scrubbing. Wiping up spills quickly and a light regular clean beats the occasional heavy scrub.
