Tile & Stone Installation

Mortar Mix Surface Preparation

SGM Mortar Mix Surface Preparation delivers a reliable and consistent mortar blend straight from the bag. It combines high-strength masonry cement, sand, and proprietary admixtures through computerized batching to eliminate on-site mixing inconsistencies. This ensures that every batch meets the same performance standards, giving professionals confidence that every installation will turn out right.
The product is available in two convenient sizes, sixty-pound and eighty-pound polyethylene-lined bags, engineered for easy handling and job-site mobility. Whether the task involves laying block, stone, or brick, tuck-pointing joints, or applying stucco scratch, brown, or finish coats, this mortar is designed to perform. It also serves as an excellent substrate for hard surface flooring in both interior and exterior applications, providing a stable, durable base for tile or other decorative finishes.
SGM Mortar Mix Surface Preparation offers simple preparation and mixing. Just add clean potable water until you reach a plastic consistency. For enhanced strength and performance, Southcrete 25 Acrylic Mortar Admix may be used instead of water. Avoid re-tempering mixes. Instead, mix fresh if consistency changes. Mechanical mixing is preferred for best results.
Proper surface preparation is key to optimal performance. Surfaces such as concrete and plaster must be structurally sound, fully cured for at least twenty-eight days, and free of contaminants like moisture, oil, wax, paint, or curing agents. If sealers are present, they must be removed and the surface washed clean before proceeding. These steps ensure the mortar adheres properly and performs reliably.
Efflorescence is a natural phenomenon with cement-based materials and may appear as a whitish deposit during or after installation. This can be influenced by factors such as water quality. It does not reflect poor product quality but rather environmental conditions that installers should be aware of.
SGM Mortar Mix Surface Preparation is designed to operate within a safe temperature range. All materials and surrounding areas should remain above forty degrees Fahrenheit and below one hundred degrees Fahrenheit for twenty-four hours before installation and seventy-two hours after. These control measures support proper curing and long-term durability.
Cleanup is simple. Uncured mortar can be washed away with water immediately. After cure, maintenance is not required, as the product is engineered for lasting performance and durability.
Coverage estimates help installers plan efficiently. For block setting, the sixty-pound bag covers approximately nine standard blocks, while the eighty-pound bag covers about twelve. The same bags cover around twenty-eight to thirty-seven standard bricks. When used as a thick-bed underlayment, the sixty-pound bag covers roughly twelve square feet at half inch thickness or six square feet at full inch thickness. The eighty-pound bag covers about sixteen square feet at half inch and eight square feet at one inch.
Shelf life is up to one year in a properly stored, unopened bag. This provides flexibility in inventory management and project scheduling.
SGM stands by its product with a one-year warranty from date of manufacture. Any defective product reported with samples will be replaced. While warranties cover poor quality, SGM makes no claim of merchantability or fitness beyond intended use.
Behind every reliable installation is a mortar mix that installers can trust. SGM Mortar Mix Surface Preparation delivers just that: consistent quality, ease of use, and proven performance for masonry and substrate work in a wide range of environments.

Product Details

INSTALLATION SURFACE PREPARATION

  • Concrete and Plaster Surfaces: All masonry should be twenty-eight (28) days cured and shall be structurally sound, clean, and free of any moisture, wax, oil, paint particles, curing agents, or foreign matter. Remove any liquid curing agents or concrete sealers, followed by a clear water wash.

MIXING

Using a clean mortar box or mechanical mixer, add sufficient cool clean potable water to desired, plastic-like, consistency. For additional strength and performance add Southcrete™ 25 Acrylic Mortar Admix in lieu of water. Do not re-temper mortar mix; discard and prepare fresh mix. Machine mixing is preferred.

  • NOTE: All cement-based products have the potential for efflorescence to materialize. This whitish powder or crystalline deposit may become visible before, during, or after installation is completed. Water with a high mineral content can also cause efflorescence.
