High-Performance Pool Finishes Built for the Long Term
The finish is the part of a pool that gets touched every time someone swims, exposed to UV every day the sun is out, and expected to hold its color and texture through years of chemical treatment. A high-performance pool finish is not just a cosmetic choice — it is the surface that determines how the pool looks, how it feels underfoot, how it holds up to the chemistry, and how long it takes before the pool needs to be refinished again.
SGM manufactures pool, spa, and fountain finishes that are used by pool builders and contractors across North America. The products span several finish categories, each with its own aesthetic and performance profile, but all built around the same standards: consistent aggregate distribution, color stability under UV exposure, and resistance to the chemical environment of a maintained pool.
What Makes a Pool Finish “High Performance”
Performance in a pool finish comes down to a few core characteristics that determine how the product behaves over its lifespan.
Aggregate quality and consistency: The aggregate in a pool finish (whether quartz, pebble, or marble) determines the texture and color of the finished surface. High-performance finishes use precisely graded aggregate that distributes evenly during application, resulting in a consistent appearance across the entire pool surface rather than color variation or thin spots.
Color stability: Pool water, UV exposure, and sanitizing chemistry all work against a finish’s color over time. High-performance finishes use pigments and aggregate selections that resist the bleaching and discoloration that lower-grade materials develop within a few years of installation.
Chemical compatibility: The finish surface is in constant contact with sanitized water. Products that are not formulated for that chemical environment will begin to etch, roughen, or degrade faster than the application warranty covers. SGM finishes are developed and tested specifically for pool and spa chemistry compatibility.
Surface integrity: A high-performance finish maintains its surface smoothness or texture (depending on the product type) without developing the roughness, scaling, or pitting that causes swimmer discomfort and increases the difficulty of maintaining water clarity over time.
SGM’s Pool Finish Product Lines
Diamond Brite is SGM’s exposed aggregate finish, available in over 40 colors across standard, Jewels, and Watercolors formulations. The exposed aggregate surface provides texture and depth that plain plaster does not achieve. Color options range from classic whites and creams to deep blues, blacks, and teal-green shades.
River Rok is SGM’s natural pebble finish. The rounded pebble aggregate creates a naturalistic texture that mimics the appearance of a river or lagoon bottom. Available in approximately 15 color selections, River Rok provides a softer underfoot texture than exposed quartz finishes.
Durazzo is SGM’s polished marble finish. The marble aggregate is ground smooth during the curing and polishing process, creating a refined surface with a higher sheen than standard plaster or aggregate finishes. Durazzo is positioned for pools where a polished, upscale aesthetic is the primary requirement.
Ultra Pearl Brite is SGM’s pearlescent finish. The product uses a pearlescent aggregate that creates a reflective quality in the water, particularly visible in sunlit outdoor pools. Available in white and blue-pearl formulations.
Selecting the Right Finish
The right finish for a specific pool depends on several factors: the pool’s design intent, the local climate, the owner’s tolerance for maintenance, and the contractor’s application experience with the product.
For pools where color depth and visual impact are the primary goals, Diamond Brite’s Jewels and Watercolors lines offer the widest color range with the most dramatic water color effects. For pools where a naturalistic appearance is the goal, River Rok performs best. For high-end residential and commercial applications where a polished surface is required, Durazzo is the appropriate choice.
SGM’s technical team and distributor network can assist with product selection, application guidance, and warranty documentation. The factory training program provides hands-on application training for plastering contractors who want certified experience with SGM products before installing them on a project.
